Aussie victorious in their first World Cup clash

Just got back from the live screen at Circular Quay. What an atmosphere. It was an incredible game. I’ve lost my voice. Australia started off well, but an early questionable goal by the Japanese set the scoreline against us. Then as the missed chances started to pile up and the seconds ticked away, there was an increasing atmosphere of nervousness and depression all the way up to the 84th minute when Cahill sent the ball into the back of the Japanese net and the Aussie crowd into the atmosphere. A second and third goal sealed the match and everyone was rapturous. 3-1. Absolutely bloody fantastic.

Too right, that was awesome. We watched at a mate’s place on a wall-sized screen, packed to the gills with blokes (and a few ladies: “so, we’re the yellow ones, right?”). There was an hour of pained depression, but when those goals came through in the last 8 minutes… I just hope no-one was trying to sleep next door.

If we’d lost to that first goal, I shudder to think of the consequences, I know a few blokes who were already googling the Egyptian consulate’s address just in case.

Meanwhile, after 4.5 hours sleep here I am at work already, any boss who sacks anyone for falling asleep at their desk today… is a bum!

She was fast asleep during the match (and is infamous in her family for watching tvdramas all through the asian hosted cup in ’02) but patently rejects the idea that Australia can be better than Japan at soccer. Even after the 3-1 win she still thinks it was a fluke.

“Japan’s a better team, they just don’t have the stamina, and Australians only have stamina because they’re all big and fat.” Wrap your head around that logic, eh? ;-)
