Lunar Eclipse Photos

These few photos depict the lunar eclipse that occurred Australia-wide on Sunday July 16, 2000. They were captured with a Fujifilm digital camera at 1800x1200, with most shots taken through a Celestron telescope.

10:23pm - This photo was taken with the camera alone. The shadow of the earth is readily visible in the early stages of the eclipse.

10:23pm - Taken with the camera through the telescope (as are the following photos). Shows the moon in much more detail with the surface features coming into view. The eclipse is well underway.

11:20pm - The eclipse is nearing totality.

11:33pm - By now, the moon was rapidly darkening. The shot above was taken with a 1 second exposure time. To the naked eye, only a sliver of the moon can be seen, and the red colouration is not so pronounced.

12:00 Midnight - The eclipse has achieved totality, and the moon now glows a readily visible, dull blood red colour in the sky.
